About the Sea Otter

The sea otter (Enhydra lutris) lives along the coasts of the North Pacific and spends nearly its entire life in the water. Its exceptionally dense fur protects it from the cold and is among the densest in the entire animal kingdom. Sea otters are known for using tools—they open clams or sea urchins by smashing them against stones on their bellies while floating on their backs.
