About the Masked Parrotfish
The Masked Parrotfish (Scarus quoyi) lives in the coral reefs of the Indian and western Pacific Oceans. It owes its name to its distinctive dark facial markings, which resemble a mask. With its powerful, beak-like teeth, it scrapes algae off corals and rocks, thereby contributing significantly to the health of coral reefs. Like other parrotfish, it produces some of the fine white sand found on tropical beaches by grinding down coral rock.
