About the Scallop

The scallop (Pecten maximus) lives on sandy and gravelly seabeds in the northeastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea. Unlike many other clams, it can move by rapidly opening and closing its shells, allowing it to escape predators. It owes its name to its historical significance as a symbol of pilgrims on the Way of St. James.
