About the Portuguese Galley

The Portuguese Galley (Physalia physalis) is found in tropical and subtropical oceans worldwide. Although it is often mistaken for a jellyfish, it is actually a colony of jellyfish —a colony of several specialized individual organisms that function together as a single animal. With its gas-filled swim bladder, it floats at the water’s surface while its long tentacles catch prey. Its stinging cells contain a potent toxin that can cause painful injuries.
