About the Red-knotted Starfish
The Red-spotted starfish (Protoreaster lincki) lives in shallow lagoons, seagrass beds, and coral reefs in the Indian Ocean. It is characterized by the bright red, cone-shaped protrusions on its back, which give it its name. These striking structures serve as protection against predators. The red-knobbed starfish feeds on algae, dead organic matter, and small invertebrates, and plays an important role in the ecosystem of tropical coastal waters.
