About the Nautilus
The Nautilus (Nautilus pompilius) lives on the slopes of tropical coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific and is considered a living fossil. Its characteristic spiral shell is divided into several air-filled chambers, which it uses to regulate its buoyancy. Unlike octopuses and squids, the nautilus has an external shell that has remained virtually unchanged for over 500 million years. It feeds mainly on crustaceans, carrion, and other small marine animals.
