About the Warted Anglerfish

The Warted Anglerfish (Antennarius maculatus) lives in the coral reefs of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Its warty body and variable coloration provide perfect camouflage among sponges and corals. A distinctive feature is the small “fishing rod” on its head, which it uses to lure prey. As soon as a fish or crab approaches, the warty anglerfish snaps it up in a flash—reaction times of just a few milliseconds rank among the fastest prey captures in the animal kingdom.
