About the Blue-ringed Octopus

The Blue-ringed octopus (Hapalochlaena) lives in the shallow coastal waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. When at rest, it is inconspicuously colored, but when threatened, its bright blue rings appear as clear warning signals. Despite its small size, it is one of the most venomous marine animals in the world. With its potent neurotoxin, it paralyzes prey such as crabs and small fish. Blue-ringed octopuses attack humans only when they are cornered or accidentally touched.
